  • We have voted as a board and decided that YouthWise in Spearfish and the TEAMMATES program will be the benefactor of the Spearfish Chocolate Festival. Below is a summary of what they do! Congrats YouthWise! YouthWise is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that has been in operation since 2007. The mission of YouthWise is to support education and advocacy for youth and families who experience mild, moderate, or severe, mental health trauma, conditions, or brain disease, along with substance abuse and misuse. YouthWise has (4) comprehensive programs that address these issues k-college. The first is a 26 year collaboration with BHSU and the Spearfish School District. This program is a unique school based mentorship program that allows college students the opportunity to mentor youth in the Spearfish School District k-12 one hour a week for 36 weeks during the school year. Every semester 45 mentors go through the process of DCI and FBI background checks and a three hour orientation to prepare to become a TEAMMATE. About 20 hours and $25 dollars is dedicated from each new Mentor to begin the clearance process. This collaboration also takes many hours of planning from school counselors, teachers, and college professors. As a result 90 children receive a special young adult in their life for that can last 4 months to 3 years. This adds up to hundreds of hours of mentorship time with each child who needs that extra positive influence in their life. Research proves if a child who is at risk for additional "attention" receives that "need" through an "other than family significant adult", the higher the protection and resiliency of that child's progress into adulthood. Others studies have shown school based mentoring lowers school drop out rates, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, teen suicide, and encourages academic success. If YouthWise is awarded the opportunity to receive funds gained from the 2017 Chocolate Festival it will be utilized directly for the $300.00 per match fee that is needed to sustain the TEAMMATES program. Each year $27,000 is needed in local donations and fundraising each year to sustain the 90 mentors working with children k-12 in the Spearfish School District. Cost include the coordination fee, recruitment fee, processing fee, fingerprinting fee's and equipment along with games and supplies needed for the engagement of the matched pair. Please consider helping us out by distributing and hanging flyers for this year's event!
